The country's traffic safety czar has awarded $1.6 million in federal grants for programs designed to curb pedestrian deaths in New York City, Philadelphia and Louisville, Kentucky.
Friedman says the three cities have experienced high numbers of pedestrian fatalities. He says they could become models for new approaches in traffic safety.
The grants are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They're part of a campaign called "Everyone is a Pedestrian."
