RUPP ARENA
Kentucky governor pushing lawmakers to pay for Rupp Arena renovations

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Monday, April 7, 2014 2:23 PM EDT
FRANKFORT, Ky.

Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear made another public push for Rupp Arena before getting on a plane to Dallas to watch Kentucky play for the national championship.

Beshear told reporters Monday that if taxpayers paid $75 million for a basketball arena for the University of Louisville, then the University of Kentucky deserves to have the same support.

State lawmakers declined to include $65 million in state-backed bonds for the Rupp Arena renovation in the budget it passed last week. But Beshear said he is pushing legislators to include the money before it adjourns for the year on April 15.

House Democrats have supported the project. But Senate Republicans said they want more details before committing to spend the money.
