IRAQ-RAPE-SLAYING UPDATE

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Thursday, February 20, 2014 5:40 AM EST
LOUISVILLE, Ky.

An ex-soldier facing life in prison with no chance at parole hanged himself in his Arizona prison cell and left no note to explain why.

Steven Dale Green, of Midland, Texas, took his own life Saturday, years after a federal jury spared him a death sentence in the 2006 attack on a teenage Iraqi girl and the shotgun slaying of her mother, father and younger sister near Mahmoudiya , Iraq.

Green was a private in the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line when he deployed to Iraq.

One of Green's civilian attorneys, Darren Wolff, said the prospect of decades in prison with no possibility of getting out while co-conspirators have an eventual chance at parole took its toll on Green.
