OFFICER KILLED
Bill would set minimum penalty of life without parole in law enforcement officer murder

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Wednesday, February 12, 2014 4:01 AM EST
FRANKFORT, Ky.

A Bardstown lawmaker says a bill named in honor of a slain police officer from his hometown would make life without parole the minimum punishment for murdering a law enforcement officer.

Republican Rep. David Floyd said in a news release that he filed The Officer Jason Ellis Memorial Act on Tuesday in memory of the Bardstown police officer killed last May.

The bill would set the minimum penalty in cases involving the intentional murder of a local or state police officer, sheriff or deputy sheriff who was on duty at the time of death.

No arrest has been made in Ellis' death. He was shot after getting out of his cruiser to pick up tree limbs on a highway ramp while he was on his way home.
