BRIDGE DEMOLITION
Demolition set Friday for remaining original pier of Milton-Madison Bridge

Reported by: Associated Press
Reported: Friday, January 31, 2014 4:01 AM EST
MILTON, Ky.

The only remaining original Milton-Madison Bridge pier is again scheduled to be demolished on Friday, meaning the bridge will be closed for about 10 minutes in the afternoon.

Indiana and Kentucky transportation officials say the demolition is in preparation for the March slide of the bridge from temporary piers onto refurbished piers.

The 92-foot-tall pier will be removed in two blasts that will take place on separate days. The first blast is to topple the pier above the water line with the second blast to break up remaining portions under water so they can be hauled off.

Three original piers have been strengthened and are being reused. The pier targeted for demolition has been replaced with a new land pier in Madison, Ind.

Demolition is set for 4 p.m. EST.
