A starving snowy owl far from its arctic home has been rescued in Louisville.
Kate Heyden, a bird biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, says the owls travel south when food sources shrink in the Arctic.
A volunteer spotted the bird on the Gene Snyder Freeway and it was captured. It is being fed a liquid diet with a feeding tube, and will likely need care for at least a month.
The rescued bird weighed 2.7 pounds. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology says adult snowy owls should weigh between 3.5 and 6.5 pounds.
