Education Commissioner Terry Holliday cites improvements in Breathitt County schools

Reported: Friday, October 18, 2013 6:13 PM EDT
Education Commissioner Terry Holliday says Breathitt County schools are improving under state management.
He says average daily attendance is up, and the graduation rate is 86.5 percent, greater than the state average. Also, the college- and career-readiness rate for graduating students has improved from 16 percent in 2010 to 46 percent in 2013.
State management of the district will continue through at least December 2015.
Management of the school district was taken over by the Department of Education after an audit found "significant" problems.
Retired Rockcastle County school superintendent Larry Hammond was appointed to oversee the schools during the takeover.
