The University of Kentucky has landed a $3 million federal grant for work on technology aimed at sharply reducing carbon pollution from coal-burning power plants.
UK researchers are working on technology to reduce the costs of capturing and storing carbon dioxide from power plants.
Research aimed at sustaining coal comes amid tough times in eastern Kentucky.
James River Coal recently announced it was idling several mines and laying off 525 full-time workers, blaming continued weak coal markets.
