A wintry mix struck the western part of Kentucky moved eastward by Friday afternoon as a line of snow storms spread across the eastern half of the U.S.
The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings for western and central Kentucky through late Friday or early Saturday, while eastern Kentucky had a flood watch in effect into Saturday morning. Some parts of the state were expecting single-digit temperatures Friday night.
In northern Kentucky, Covington police closed the Ohio River Roebling Bridge in both directions Friday afternoon due to icy conditions.
Gov. Steve Beshear urged residents to prepare for possible power outages and difficult travel. He said the state's emergency management system will monitor conditions and stay in contact with local officials.
